Weekend in Istria

Friday, October 24th, 2008

Weekend in IstriaSmall village of Tinjan is located only 10 km from Pazin and it is the location of a gastronomic manifestation dedicated to Istrian prosciutto. It is called ISAP 2008 and held from the 25th to 26th of October. In the tradition of the Istrian gastronomy the prosciutto, or “pršut” in Croatian, is the measure for all the exquisiteness. It is cut into “fete” by long, delicate and careful incisions, so an old joke says that cutting it is like playing a violin. Fete or cuts of ham are first smaller in the start, to become ever bigger towards the end, the color of the prosciutto turns ever redder and its smell is more and more intense…

If you get bored from prosciutto you can always visit Rovinj. At 11 AM on the 25th of October, the city center of Rovinj hosts the Days of Bread, Olive Oil, Wine and Games, an amusing manifestation with a rich Istrian gastronomic offer. Many producers of olive oil, wine and bakery products from all over Istria also participate in the manifestation and offer their products. Beside games, there is also a rich entertaining program with the characteristics of the Istrian region.

Enjoy!

Istrian truffles

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

Istrian trufflesIn Istria, in the forests of the Mirna river valley, a special sort of mushroom – truffle, has found its habitat. What is it that is so mystic and attractive in an underground, at first sight awkward plant looking like potato, that the people are willing to spend a fortune and proclaim it „king of the gastronomy“? Which one is better – the white one or the black one? What exactly are truffles in the culinary world – mushrooms or spices? Truffle is a subterraneous mushroom of intensive, recognisable odour, of distinct, unique aroma and taste. The richest finding places of this mushroom in Croatia are exactly in the region of Istria where it was firstly discovered in 1929. These finding places are located in the region of central Istria, in wet Motovun forest where the Mirna River runs through, more precisely – near the village Livade and in Buzeština, where Buzet is already known as the “town of truffles”. The biggest truffle ever found in this region, which was then recorded in the Guinness World Records book, was taken out in 1999 near Buje and it weighted impressive 1,31 kg.   Although in many Istrian restaurants the truffles can be tasted in combination with different main courses and side dishes, the gastronomers will say that truffles give their maximum when they play the main role on the plate. Finally, it is worth mentioning truffles in combination with Istrian fuži or home made polenta as the truffle is here definitely in the first plan. Istria is the habitat of the big white truffle also known as “Tuber Magnatum Pico”, and three other sorts of black truffles and as their seasons take turns, in Istria you can taste truffles whole year round. And as for the story on their aphrodisiac effects…? Well… you will have to find that answer yourselves…:-)

Motovun Film Festival

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

Motovun Film FestivalMotovun Film Festival is an annual film festival established in 1999 and held in Motovun, a small town in Istria, Croatia. Festival is entirely dedicated to films made in small cinematographies and independent productions. In everything, except for the ambition and the quality, Motovun wants to be a small festival showing small films, small in the warmest sense of the word. Festival program consists of around 70 titles from all over the world, from documentaries to feature films, from short to long films, from guerilla made films to co-productions. The only criteria in their selection is that they fit in the open-minded atmosphere of the festival. Every year during the festival a camp for visitors is organized on the foothills of Motovun, where anybody can put up their tent almost for free. The main award at the festival is called Propeler Motovuna (The Propeller of Motovun, inspired by the wind turbines located near Motovun). In 2008, the Motovun Maverick Award was introduced, given to notable filmmakers for lifetime achievement. Its first recipient was Ken Russell, an English film director.

Pula Film FestivalThis year the town of Pula hosts the 55th movie festival. This big manifestation is held in the almost 2000 year old Vespasian’s amphiteathre, the famous Arena of Pula, which becomes one of the largest cinemas in the world during the festival by hosting almost 8000 visitors. Some of the biggest names of Hollywood have marked the history of this festival, names like Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor, Miloš Forman, Sam Peckinpah, John Malkovich, Jeremy Irons and many others. Despite this, the biggest star of the festival was always the Arena of Pula and the atmosphere it creates. There is a rich program of national and international movies on display every year and the best movie in the national competition receives the Golden Arena. This year is also special because of the famous British actor Christopher Lee, who got a special recognition for his life achievement.
