Exhibitions in Opatija

Two interesting exhibitions, “Golden medals caterers from Opatija” and “Cookbooks and menus”, will be opened by the Croatian minister of tourism, mister Damir Bajs, at 12:30 on Monday, November 17th 2008, in Opatija.

The exhibition “Golden medals caterers from Opatija” will be presented in the beautiful ambient of old “Villa Angiolina”. The exhibition is on the theme of numerous golden medals, which many caterers of Opatija obtained on the prestigious catering competitions throughout the world.

The exhibition “Cookbooks and menus” is dedicated to cookbooks and menus from the private collection of Zlatko Puntijar, a famous editor and publisher, and owner of the well known restaurant Old Puntijar in Zagreb, and from the holdings of Croatian museum of tourism.

Both of these exhibitions will be opened for all visitors from November 17th 2008 to January 11th 2009. Be sure to visit them if you’re in town!

“Musikfest” festival in Opatija

The month of October in Opatija will be marked by concerts with stars of German folk and chanson music, who will also be accompanied by several domestic bands from Opatija and Rijeka. Music manifestation “Musikfest” has been organized in the Istrian town of Porec through its first years of existance, but it was eventualy moved into the beautiful tourist town Opatija two years ago.

The town of Opatija began to develop as a tourist resort in the 19th century and to crown the enjoyment of many contemporary aristocrats and distinguished personalities of the Habsburg monarchy who frequented it, a special type of cuisine combining Viennese and French was cultivated which blended the local ingredients of this area. Preparation of dishes was «imperially» complex considering the noble guests of the time without any ready-made seasonings and it was quite time-consuming. The gastronomic event «Gastronomy of Opatija in the 19th Century» helps all the guests to feel like the nobility and enjoy the delicacies of a bygone era each year.
