Nehay tower in SegnaThe first Uskok days are held this year in Segna to celebrate the 450th anniversary of the Nehay fort. The uskoks were a famous guerilla force which inhabited the areas around Segna and its Nehaj fort, and they gained their reputation during the wars with Venice abd the Ottoman Empire. The fort of Nehaj was built by a famous uskok Ivan Lenkovic in 1558 and it served as the main uskok outpost for decades. Today, it serves as a museum in the city of Senj, and during the festival there are many cultural events held in the fort. The name Nehaj comes from “Ne hajati” which could be translated as “Not to worry”. The uskoks gave it that name to simbolize how there is no need for the inhabitants of Segna to worry about being conquered as long as the y are defending the town.
